Happy International Day of Happiness day. It’s not as frivolous as it sounds

ImageThe UN has declared today the first “International Day of Happiness.”  It’s not about skipping merrily around or buying that Porsche you thought might make your life complete.

It’s about a focus on well-being, and all that entails: community, health, access to clean water and good food.  A reminder that reckless pursuit of wealth isn’t good for the planet.

Just like every day should be women’s day, or mother’s day, in the sense that we shouldn’t need a special day to honor women or moms, every day should be a day where we are aware of the impact of our actions on each other and the planet, and the power of how we spend our time and money.

Of course, it’s not.  But having a big publicity stunt can’t hurt to plant the notion of these ideals–that you can be a conscious consumer, a better member of your community, that unsustainable growth is short-sighted, that there are other ways to live than in a purely cash-grab culture–in the public consciousness.

All of this stems, of course, from Bhutan and Gross National Happiness.  Last year at the UN there was a big confab lead by Bhutan about these notions.  While Bhutan isn’t perfect, hardly perfect, it is a world leader in rallying governments and the people who lead them to discuss GNH over pure unbridled GDP.

A million dollars of happiness for Santa Monica

The city of Santa Monica has been awarded a million-dollar grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to develop an index for well-being.  (You can read about the other winners of the”Mayors Challenge” in this NY Times story.)

ImageSanta Monica’s produced a slick promotional video for the effort (shot on the Big Blue Bus, buses being indicators of happiness because they avert that antidote to happiness, commuting.) While it incorrectly claims they shall be the first city to chart happiness (Seattle beat them to the distinction, and then there’s what’s been doing in the state of Vermont) it’s still exciting to see the city leaders commit to understanding, and then hopefully improving, quality of life.  By actually factoring quality of life into the equation, rather than treating it as a sideline.

The question they pose in their proposal: “how can cities use limited resources more effectively to create conditions needed for people to thrive?”

And of course all these efforts derive from the Gross National Happiness movement that emanates from the Kingdom of Bhutan….and, if you’re reading this, you likely know my interest in all that.

Now of course, none of this makes anyone happier. (And happiness is a squishy thing to define, right?)  It just makes people aware of the component parts that make a community a good, productive, proactiveplace to live.

Radio Shangri-La now out in #Korea

Radio Shangri-La now out in #Korea

Released today by Sui Books. I’m told the literal translation of the title is “Happy Radio.”

My publisher says the Koreans are as eager to learn about happiness as anyone. Of course, this book is about finding happiness within yourself, with a dollop of adventure. It’s also, mostly, about how media impacts our happiness…

This marks the country in which RSL has been released in addition to the US: Brazil, the Netherlands, New Zealand, India, China and Germany.

Thanks for your support!

“May the sun of #peace and #happiness shine over all people”

Three copies were signed by King and members of Parliament: one in Dzongkha, one in English, one in gold

I’ve just been asked if Bhutan’s constitution, signed in 2008 after the seating of its first elected Parliament, contains a promise of happiness.

The answer is yes: four times.

In the preamble: “…enhance the unity, happiness and well-being of the people for all time”

In Article 9: “The State shall strive to promote those conditions that will enable the pursuit of Gross National Happiness.”

Inside the hall of the Thimphu dzong, where the copies were placed on view for the public

In Article 20: “The Government shall protect and strengthen the sovereignty of the Kingdom, provide good governance, and ensure peace, security, well-being and happiness of the people.”

And in the last line of the national anthem:

“May the sun of peace and happiness shine over all people”

Everyone who came to see the newly-signed constitution was given a copy, and a little bottle of juice.

Now what about that rupee crisis!

The Dalai Lama’s advice for unhappy millionaires: @WSJ

His Holiness tells WSJ reporter Barbara Chai: “….money only brings comfort for our physical needs. Good shelter, good food, good clothes. Money never brings peace of mind. I think through money, you may develop some kind of satisfaction, that’s actually just one side. Not complete, holistic. More money, more fear.”

But it’s much better to see the video here.

Shangri-La meets Bliss: @lisanapoli in conversation with @eric_weiner on happiness, happy places, the meaning of life, and, yeah, #Bhutan

Can you come out next Tuesday March 6th to Track 16 at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica to hear/see bestselling author and all-around swell guy Eric Weiner (Geography of Bliss, Man Seeks God,) talk to me about happiness, happy places, travel, random coincidences, the media, the meaning of life, and maybe a bit about Bhutan?

It’s a private event we’re doing to promote the paperback release of Radio Shangri-La, which Broadway Books is publishing on April 3rd.  (And we’ll give you a sneak preview of some big Shangri-La news, which involves a major retail chain as well as a philanthropic gift being made to READBhutan.
(There’s a new subtitle, new cover, fresh afterword, and a reader’s guide.)

8pm.  Doors open at 7:00 with some snacks etc.  Feel free to circulate this invite to someone who might be interested.
Just let us know you’re coming here so we can keep count:
And if that’s not enough of an incentive….don’t you want to see my broken foot?

@BBC: #Bhutan’s #happiness spreads to the #UN

This one is from the BBC (and mentions GNH incorrectly) and focuses on the Bhutanese ambassador to the UN, who says happiness is a “Utopian ideal” but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve to be addressed.

#Happiness and the #UN

This editorial from Kuensel lauds the UN’s interest in measuring happiness, a la Bhutan. Nowhere yet have I seen a word lambasting the UN for praising the GNH policy while not mentioning the refugee situation.
